In the Web3 social domain, creating "killer applications" is a key challenge. This article explores two potential strategies: enhancing existing social experiences and building Web3 native communities.
Enhancing Social Experience through Tokenization
Reddit's Moons program is a typical case. The program provides content rewards for users of the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit, using an ERC-20 Token based on Arbitrum Nova. The issuance of Moons is linked to users' "reputation," and through a carefully designed token economic model, it aims to enhance the value of the Token in the long term.
However, the simple "posting for profit" mechanism may be difficult to sustain. Data shows that the actual earnings of most users are minimal. Overemphasizing "making money" may lead to user disappointment and even project collapse.
In contrast, the friends.tech project presents a novel social experience. Users can trade "stocks" of influencers to gain exclusive interaction opportunities. This model has sparked heated discussions in the short term, but its long-term sustainability remains to be seen.
Building a Web3 Native Social Ecosystem
Phaver is a typical native Web3 social platform. It is built on social graphs like Lens and integrates Web3 identity technologies such as NFTs and soulbound Tokens. The platform adopts a dual-token model, incentivizing user participation through a "reputation" and "points" system.
The POAP project originates from the "conference culture" in the crypto space, transforming event participation into on-chain NFTs. This mechanism could serve as a foundation for launching new types of social networks.
Create a true "killer application"
To create a successful Web3 social application, the key lies in providing a completely new social experience rather than simply replicating Web2 mechanisms. The application needs to have easily understandable use cases while maintaining an open design space that allows users to create freely. Only by unleashing users' creativity can Web3 social truly achieve breakthroughs and become the mainstream social paradigm.
