DAO acquired the rights to the image of the Doge meme
Those responsible for the project stated that by licensing the iconic Shiba Inu image, they hoped to "unify the entire Doge community."
Own The Doge, the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) associated with the Shiba Inu meme behind the Dogecoin token
DOGE, announced that it had secured the legal rights to the iconic image.
Speaking to Cointelegraph on April 17, the leaders of the Own The Doge project, John Monarch and 'Tridog', said they had negotiated a deal with Sato Atsuko, the 18-year-old Shiba Inu Kabosu owner who became popular for her confused expression while sitting on a couch. The group bought exclusive licenses and rights to Doge's image, seemingly giving them control over merchandise and other uses of the meme in the crypto space.
"I think [the deal] unlocks a lot for corporations, where there's confusion around copyright," Tridog said.
Own The Doge said that with greater clarity around the copyright of the doge image, which had seemingly been an open field for years, there were opportunities for partnerships with big brands. The project said they approached Sato about three years ago and were able to negotiate a deal to buy the rights to Kabosu's image by working with legal experts in Japan and the United States.
Working with Sato and others, the project has already released a documentary about the history of Doge and the evolution of the image in and out of the crypto space. According to Tridog, the group was not "looking to enforce" its copyright claim on users and certain brands who are already using the image to spread their mantra of 'doing good every day'.
"We want to unify the entire doge community," Monarch said. "We feel like Dogecoin and a lot of others, like the NFT [non-fungible tokens] side, and the people who are in the memes and the Reddit world, have always diverged a little bit [...] It's about uniting the paths under the same cultural umbrella."
The basis for Doge's image dates back to 2010 when Sato took a casual photo of Kabosu sitting on a yellow couch at his home in Japan. Monarch suggested that he had been the first person to use the term 'Doge' on social media, which eventually led to more memes, the Dogecoin token, and various crypto-themed products.
Tridog said the purchase of the licensing rights would likely not affect the Dogecoin Foundation or the meme token, which continues to use the image. Kabosu will celebrate his 19th birthday on Nov. 2 at a celebration in Japan. Although it's old for a dog, it has some way to go: The world's oldest Shiba Inu lived more than 26 years.
