Hong Kong workers arrested for crypto mining using electricity from a nursing home
Two technicians in Hong Kong were arrested for secretly using the electricity and internet of disabled care centers to operate cryptocurrency mining machines. According to the South China Morning Post, they installed eight mining machines in the false ceilings of two facilities in Sham Shui Po and Kwun Tong. This activity caused electricity bills to increase by up to 9,000 HKD (, around 1,153 USD ), and resulted in unusually slow internet, which was then discovered by staff and reported to the police.
The police reported that two suspects, aged 32 and 33, exploited the facility upgrade process to connect mining machines to the electricity and network systems. The incident is considered isolated and unrelated to any gang. According to Hong Kong law, the act of using electricity illegally can result in a penalty of up to 5 years in prison.
