Just saw this wild story and had to share. Some solo miner rented like $75 worth of cloud computing power and actually solved a Bitcoin block, walking away with over $200k. The odds on that are absolutely insane.
So here's what happened - they used 1 petahash per second of rented hashrate through CKPool to validate block 938,092 and grabbed the full 3.125 BTC reward. That's basically a 2,600x return on a lottery ticket. The crazy part is that cloud crypto mining has gotten so accessible now that anyone can literally rent computing power for pocket change and take a shot at it. No need to own actual mining hardware anymore.
What's interesting is solo-mined blocks are actually becoming less rare than they used to be. Over the past year, 21 different solo miners managed to find blocks worth a combined 66 BTC. That's happening despite network difficulty climbing to 144.4 trillion after the latest adjustment - a 15% jump that made things tougher for everyone. But this miner got lucky right during a window when the network had just dropped difficulty from winter storms, so the timing worked out perfectly.
It really shows how on-demand cloud hashrate rental has democratized mining. You don't need to be some industrial operation anymore. It's more like buying a scratch-off card now - transparent odds, minimal entry cost, and occasionally someone actually wins big. Pretty wild that $75 turned into that kind of return.
