Canadian electro-pop artist Grimes has extended an invitation to her fanbase, urging them to produce artificial intelligence-generated music featuring her voice. The singer shared this innovative concept via Twitter on April 24.
In her announcement, Grimes stated that she would divide 50% of the royalties with creators of tracks that become "successful" and "viral". As an independent artist without label affiliations, she assured that there would be no legal complications.
Grimes outlined a single guideline for this creative endeavor: the lyrics must not be "toxic". This restriction excludes the creation of songs with themes of violence, Nazi ideology, or political content. Such compositions may face removal.
It's noteworthy that Grimes, formerly in a relationship with entrepreneur Elon Musk, is renowned for her enthusiasm for technological advancements and innovation. Diverging from many artists, she embraces the concept of open-sourcing all forms of art.
The singer tweeted: "I'll split 50% royalties on any successful AI generated song that uses my voice. Same deal as I would with any artist i collab with. Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal bindings."
In the current landscape, AI tools have the capability to replicate the voices and performance styles of well-known singers. To craft an AI-produced song, "creators" can generate lyrics and beats mimicking selected artists' styles. Users can then compile these elements, allowing AI to produce the track in their preferred manner. This technology empowers artists, music producers, and enthusiasts to develop tracks without financial burden when used for personal purposes.
Earlier this month, an AI-generated track titled "Heart on My Sleeve", featuring the AI-replicated voices of rapper Drake and singer The Weeknd, gained widespread attention. The song amassed 15 million views on TikTok and 600,000 streams on Spotify. However, the track was subsequently removed by Universal Music Group last week due to copyright infringement concerns.
