The U.S. federal government has officially shut down — for the first time in 8 years and already for the third time under Donald Trump. The reason is a dispute over healthcare and budget between Democrats and Republicans.

◾️ The publication of macro data, some studies, and payments to the military have been suspended.
◾️ Hundreds of thousands of civil servants have been sent on forced leave, institutions are closing.
◾️ The economy is losing about $400 million a day.

Shutdown ≠ crisis for the markets

Since 1976, the U.S. has experienced 21 similar government shutdowns. On average, the S&P 500 index fell by only 0.4%, and in 85% of cases, it quickly recovered after opening.

Even the record 35-day shutdown in 2018 ended with a market growth of +11.6% over 3 months.

For Wall Street, this is more of an opportunity to "buy at a discount."
