UK pledges not to budge from Trump’s pressure on Greenland
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom has made clear that it will not bow to pressure from US President Donald Trump over his plan to impose trade tariffs on European countries that oppose his bid to acquire Greenland. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that the government’s position on Greenland is “non negotiable” and emphasized that the island’s future is a matter for the Greenlanders and Denmark to decide.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned Trump’s tariff threats as “completely wrong,” reiterating that the UK will defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity while engaging in dialogue with the US on broader issues.
Last week, several European and Nordic countries, including the UK, participated in a Danish-led military exercise in Greenland. While some troops, such as Germany’s, have already returned home, the exercise highlighted ongoing NATO cooperation in the region.
The dispute over Greenland has also drawn criticism from Russia, with officials describing the situation as extraordinary under international law, though unsurprising given Trump’s disregard for the perspectives of other nations.
