The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday that MiG-31 fighters armed with the “Kinzhal” hypersonic missile completed a routine flight mission over neutral waters in the Sea of Japan.

During the flight, the MiG-31 conducted aerial refueling training. The Russian Ministry of Defense also released short clips of the MiG-31’s flight and refueling.

According to TASS, additional fighter jets accompanied the mission, initially flying eastward, then changing course near Shimane Prefecture in Japan, before returning to Russian territory.

The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that the flights of the Aerospace Forces’ aircraft strictly adhere to international airspace regulations and are part of routine regional patrol activities.

Public information shows that the “Kinzhal” is a Russian-developed hypersonic air-launched missile system capable of striking land and sea targets. It is an air-launched version of the land-based “Iskander” missile system. The “Kinzhal” missile can reach speeds of Mach 10, has a range of 2,000 kilometers, and can carry nuclear or conventional warheads, offering advantages such as hypersonic speed, maneuverability, and high-precision strikes.

The “Kinzhal” missile has been in service since December 2017.
