President Trump stated during a White House speech on Tuesday that two high-ranking Iranian officials have been eliminated. Trump did not specify names but mentioned that one of them is a top-level figure.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz earlier claimed that the Israeli airstrike killed Iran’s top National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani and Basij militia commander Gholamreza Soleimani. Iranian state media did not immediately confirm the deaths, only saying that Larijani’s office would issue a statement.

The Israel Times and CNN reported that Katz said Iran’s actual leader, Larijani, has “fallen into hell,” alongside former Supreme Leader Khamenei. Reuters quoted Israeli officials as saying it is unclear whether Larijani has died, but that Israel’s overnight strike on Monday targeted him. Before the reports of his death, he had posted a handwritten condolence message for a fallen Navy member.

Larijani is Iran’s nuclear negotiator and a close confidant of Khamenei. He attended a rally in the Holy City last Friday. The U.S. later posted a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of 10 Iranian military officers, including Larijani, connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
