American Express partners with Coinbase to launch Amex Passport travel commemorative NFT.

American Express has launched the NFT application Amex Passport for U.S. cardholders, allowing users to record every country they have visited with a "digital stamp." According to a report by Blockworks, Colin Marlowe, Vice President of Emerging Partnerships at American Express, stated in an interview that the digital stamps are not just symbolic; each stamp corresponds to a Base Blockchain ERC-721 NFT piece, allowing AE users to own exclusive travel memorabilia.

Amex Passport digital stamp collection passport is not for promoting cryptocurrency

The Amex Passport, which collects digital stamps for travel check-ins via NFT, serves merely as a symbol of personal travel records and will be integrated into the existing American Express mobile app. This new feature operates separately from the brand new travel app that AE is set to launch on September 18. To encourage users to start collecting travel souvenirs immediately, American Express will retrospectively add countries that users have visited over the past two years. Each user will have an automatically created crypto wallet managed by American Express, with the entire process occurring quietly in the background, requiring no user intervention or management of the wallet itself, nor any understanding of blockchain or wallet creation. When cardholders make purchases globally using their American Express cards, the system will automatically generate corresponding stamp tokens in the background.

When discussing the integration of Blockchain, Marlowe stated that American Express deliberately adopted a low-profile approach that does not disrupt the user experience during development. Users cannot see the wallet interface and cannot interact directly with the blockchain; stamps cannot be traded or transferred. The intention behind these designs is not to promote cryptocurrency but to create a more tangible presence for travel memories through an innovative and commemorative approach.

Colin Marlowe said that the reason for choosing to put digital travel stamps on-chain is because the permanence of records brought by blockchain technology is akin to the ink traces of a physical stamp, leaving a deeper imprint on the journey. He expressed the hope that when people look back on their past trips, they can feel the charm of travel again and be inspired to set off once more, embarking on new adventures together with American Express.

At the beginning of this year, Coinbase and aeternity have begun their collaboration.

It is not surprising that this project is landing on the Base blockchain. In June of this year, Coinbase collaborated with American Express to launch the Coinbase One card, allowing cardholders to earn 2% to 4% Bitcoin rewards on every purchase. Both Coinbase and American Express position their brands in the high-end market, meaning that while the services are relatively expensive, they also offer a differentiated experience and value. Currently, the American Express Passport NFT stamp collection feature has been opened to cardholders in the United States. Users can find 'Settings' under the 'Account' menu within the American Express mobile app, and further click on 'Try New Features' to activate this service.
