## Understanding Avail (AVAIL): Infrastructure Solution for Modular Blockchain
Avail (AVAIL) designs infrastructure solutions that steer the evolution of Web3 toward a more scalable, interoperable, and secure blockchain ecosystem. As a foundational layer for modular execution, Avail enables various application layers to develop independently without compromising security or decentralization. The project is built on three main pillars—Avail DA, Avail Nexus, and Avail Fusion—that work synergistically to form a Unification Layer to address fundamental challenges in the blockchain industry.
## Origin and Development of Avail
The creators behind Avail include Anurag Arjun and Prabal Banerjee, two blockchain thinkers who previously played crucial roles in the Polygon ecosystem. Anurag Arjun, in particular, built Polygon Labs in 2017, an experience that shaped their vision for the next-generation blockchain infrastructure. Avail's journey began in 2020 as an initiative within the Polygon ecosystem, later evolving into an independent organization in 2023 with a sharper focus on availability solutions and modularity.
Industry confidence in Avail’s vision is reflected in support from top-tier investors. The company has secured funding from Figment, Dragonfly, Nomad, SevenX, and Founders Fund, demonstrating the venture capital community’s belief in the revolutionary potential of this technology to transform the blockchain landscape.
## Architecture and Technological Components of Avail
### Foundation: Avail DA and Data Availability
Avail DA is the core of this protocol, handling transaction ordering and publication with a unique mechanism that separates concerns between data provision and execution. This design allows light clients to verify block data availability without downloading or processing entire blocks—an essential innovation for scalability.
The architecture of Avail DA is organized into three integrated layers:
**Ordering and Data Hosting Layer**: Stores and organizes transactional data from various sources, ensuring it is available for verification without executing the transactions themselves. Its data-agnostic design makes this layer compatible with EVM, WASM, and custom runtime environments.
**Transaction Processing Layer**: Retrieves available data, executes transactions, creates state checkpoints, and produces cryptographic proofs to be submitted to the next layer. This separation allows parachains and rollups to manage their own execution mechanisms.
**Verification and Dispute Resolution Layer**: Receives proofs from execution layers, validates state transitions, and ensures only legitimate state changes are recognized by the network. This arbitration function guarantees protocol integrity without sacrificing speed.
### Consensus Mechanism and Security
Avail DA adopts a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) model with BABE/GRANDPA consensus derived from Substrate. This combination achieves fast block production with provable finality—an ideal trade-off between throughput and security. Validators act as guardians, ensuring only verified and approved data propagates through the network.
### Transaction Cycle in the Avail Ecosystem
The transaction process follows a structured flow:
Rollup transactions enter Avail DA with a unique application identifier. The data then undergoes erasure coding (erasure coding) to add redundancy and enhance fault tolerance. The next step involves creating commitments using KZG polynomial commitments—a cryptographic mechanism that guarantees integrity without requiring full data access.
Validators verify the commitments, reach consensus, and broadcast verified blocks. Light clients utilize Data Availability Sampling (DAS) for spot-checking data integrity, democratizing verification without the need for expensive infrastructure. This approach transforms the economic proposition for small nodes and desktop clients.
## Expanding the Scope: Avail Nexus and Avail Fusion
### Avail Nexus: Bridging Ecosystems
Avail Nexus is responsible for connecting multiple blockchains within and outside the Avail ecosystem, using Avail DA as the primary source of truth. The aggregation and proof verification layer processes cross-chain interactions, while the sequencer selection mechanism ensures fairness and transparency. The goal is to create a seamless experience where users can interact with various rollups and external chains frictionlessly—truly a unified Web3 vision.
### Avail Fusion: Enhanced Security
The most ambitious feature is Avail Fusion, which allows native assets from Bitcoin and Ethereum to be staked alongside the native Avail token. This innovation deepens the economic security of the ecosystem by leveraging collateral value from the largest blockchains. Although the prototype is still in development, the concept of Avail Fusion marks a milestone in the evolution of blockchain security—hybrid models that exponentially strengthen network resilience.
## Significance in Blockchain Evolution
Avail (AVAIL) represents a solution to the blockchain trilemma—combining modularity, scalability, and security in ways never before achieved. By addressing availability and interoperability issues, Avail opens the door for a more sophisticated and user-friendly generation of blockchain applications, accelerating mainstream adoption within the Web3 ecosystem.
