Vitalik Buterin Outlines Path Forward for Ethereum: Decentralization and Scalability Must Advance Together
In early 2025, Vitalik Buterin shared his perspective on Ethereum’s trajectory, emphasizing that while significant progress has been achieved, the network still requires substantial improvements to fulfill its ultimate vision. The Ethereum co-founder highlighted that the platform is moving toward becoming a robust world computer—a foundational infrastructure layer for a truly open and decentralized internet. According to Vitalik Buterin’s recent commentary on X, this ambitious goal demands continued work across multiple fronts simultaneously.
2025 Technical Progress: Building Momentum
Ethereum has indeed made meaningful strides recently. The network has increased its gas cap, expanded the number of blobs for improved data throughput, and optimized node software quality. More significantly, zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) has achieved a notable performance milestone. Complemented by the advancement of PeerDAS technology, Ethereum has moved closer to its goal of becoming a more scalable and powerful blockchain. These developments represent important stepping stones in the network’s evolution.
Challenges Ahead: More Than Just Speed
However, Vitalik Buterin stressed that technical improvements alone are insufficient. Ethereum must simultaneously enhance three critical dimensions: usability, scalability, and decentralization. This work spans both the blockchain layer—encompassing runtime and communication software—and the application layer. The challenge is multifaceted: the network must enable decentralized applications to operate without fraud, censorship, or reliance on third parties. Crucially, these applications should continue functioning even if original developers vanish or centralized intermediaries like Cloudflare experience disruptions.
Beyond Speed: The World Computer Vision
Vitalik Buterin’s perspective underscores that Ethereum’s purpose transcends mere transaction throughput. The world computer concept requires building resilient, uncensorable infrastructure capable of supporting a genuinely free internet. This demands that decentralization, scalability, and usability progress in tandem rather than at the expense of one another. The road ahead requires coordinated efforts across protocol development, layer 2 solutions, and ecosystem-wide optimization.
