Ethereum activates Blob optimization with BPO2 upgrade
The mainnet of Ethereum officially received the BPO2 upgrade, an important optimization solution focused on enhancing Blob pressure. As announced by Ethereum Foundation researcher Alex Stokes via social media, this update marks a new step in the ongoing evolution of the protocol. Real-time blockchain data confirms that the parameters have been significantly adjusted.
Increase in Blob capacity on the mainnet
With the implementation of the upgrade, the target value of Blob has been raised to 14 per block, while the maximum capacity now reaches 21. This increase represents a notable expansion in the amount of Blob data the network can process simultaneously. Doubling these parameters reflects Ethereum’s ongoing commitment to expanding its processing capacity and reducing transaction costs, especially for layer 2 solutions.
The decision to raise these limits was based on network performance analyses and monitoring of Blob data behavior since previous implementations. With this optimization, a significant improvement in the efficiency of rollup operations relying on this functionality is expected.
How the BPO optimization mechanism works
BPO is a simplified upgrade mechanism introduced after the Fusaka upgrade, allowing quick adjustments to critical Blob-related parameters. Unlike complex updates that require a complete rebuild of consensus across the network, BPO offers a more agile path for iterations and improvements.
This modular and flexible approach demonstrates Ethereum’s maturity in its ability to continuously evolve. The system allows developers and researchers to adjust Blob parameters as needed, responding quickly to network conditions and ecosystem demands without compromising the protocol’s stability or security.
