New type of scam with cheap tubes: how to recognize fraud
Recently, a new scam method has become widespread, primarily involving cheap hand cream tubes. Criminals send packages with cosmetics, including a gift card from a well-known store — and many people, especially elderly family members, accept these “gifts” as a sign of attention. In reality, it is a carefully planned scam designed to lure victims into a fraud network.
What a typical package with tubes looks like
The standard setup of such a scam looks like this: several cheap hand cream tubes plus a Jingdong (京东) card. At first glance, everything appears quite “normal” and safe. Senders often use regional addresses — for example, packages may supposedly come from Hunan, creating the impression of a personal gift. The cost of one such tube on the Pinduoduo platform is only 1.99 yuan, and buying 10 tubes wholesale makes it critically inexpensive. This low cost allows scammers to mass-distribute these packages.
Why people fall for this trap
The psychology behind this scam is simple and effective. Receiving an unexpected gift evokes feelings of gratitude and trust. A small tube of cream seems harmless, and many forget to stay vigilant. Then, when the recipient uses the attached card or tries to learn about the “sender,” the second stage of the scam begins — requesting personal data, financial information, or funds supposedly for activating the gift. Thus, the initial “gift” is just a tool for enticement.
How to protect yourself and your loved ones
The main rule when receiving unexpected packages is to verify their authenticity. If you did not expect a gift and do not know the sender, such a package with tubes and a card should raise suspicion. Do not rush to use the attached cards or enter any data into them. Be sure to contact the supposed sender directly — call or write, rather than relying on the information in the package itself.
It is especially important to warn elderly family members: small “gifts” are often the beginning of professional trust scams. Even a cheap tube of cream can be a lure for a larger scam. In case of doubt, it is better to consult with relatives or contact consumer protection authorities than to risk your safety.
