ClawdBot founder's GitHub account hacked, clarifies no connection to cryptocurrency projects
Recently, ClawdBot founder Peter Steinberger publicly reported a serious account security incident on social media platforms. According to PANews, his GitHub account was hacked and impersonated by malicious actors, who attempted to use the compromised account to publish false content. Steinberger subsequently sought assistance from the GitHub community in hopes of regaining control of the account as soon as possible.
False Statements and Clarifications After Account Impersonation
The compromised account was misused, with impersonators attempting to post false information related to cryptocurrency tokens. In response to these malicious activities, Steinberger issued clear denials, emphasizing that he has not launched any cryptocurrency token projects. He also pointed out that submissions in the account’s history were exploited by malicious actors to create false evidence, attempting to frame him for improper activities. Such account impersonation incidents are not uncommon in the open-source community, often resulting in the spread of false reposts and causing serious damage to personal and project reputations.
Trademark Disputes and the Complex Factors Behind Account Name Changes
Steinberger further explained the real reason behind the account name change. It was due to Anthropic’s request, based on trademark protection considerations, requiring him to change the account name—this was not his voluntary decision. Due to trademark rights issues, the name ClawdBot needed to be adjusted accordingly, which led to failures during the GitHub account renaming process. Meanwhile, his account name on X was also pre-registered by community members as a precaution. This chain of events further complicated the account security issues and served as a warning to open-source developers—that even founders of well-known projects can become targets of online fraud.
