# OpenAI Releases AI Programmer App Codex

OpenAI has released a standalone app for the programming assistant Codex. It is available to macOS users.

The software is designed to serve as a “control center” that helps software developers manage multiple AI agents.

The startup reported that over 1 million people have used Codex in the past month. The company introduced the product in April and made it publicly available in October.

The new app aims to capture market share from competitors like Anthropic and Cursor, which already offer popular similar solutions.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that Codex is “the company’s most loved internal product ever.”

“This is an incredible milestone for us. I haven’t slept at night from excitement, creating all kinds of things myself,” — said the entrepreneur.

In the app, agents run in separate threads organized by projects. Users can view changes and perform their tasks in parallel.

Codex includes a library of “skills” such as image generation. These are intended to assist with tasks that go beyond simple coding.

Other new features include:

• the ability to set up automation — AI agents will operate in the background on a schedule;
• choosing personalities for digital assistants.

Access to Codex is usually included in paid subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu. However, with the release, the company made the app open to everyone for a limited time.

Recall that in January, a specialized version of the GPT-5 line for programming — GPT-5.2 Codex — became available in Cursor.

In November 2025, Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 4.5 — “the best model in the world for programming, agents, and computer use.”
