The World Health Organization and its International Agency for Research on Cancer released the latest global research report indicating that nearly 40% of cancer cases worldwide can be prevented. The report estimates that in 2022, approximately 37.8% (about 7.1 million) of all new cancer cases were related to preventable factors, highlighting the significant potential of prevention in reducing the global cancer burden. The report states that the new study investigated 30 preventable carcinogenic factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index (BMI), lack of physical activity, air pollution, and nine infectious agents that can cause cancer. The research covered data from multiple countries and 36 types of cancer, identifying smoking as the leading preventable carcinogenic factor worldwide, accounting for 15% of all new cancer cases, followed by infections (10%) and alcohol consumption (3%).
