The new AI-based Aluminium OS from Google, which will unify Android and ChromeOS, will not be released before 2028. This was reported by The Verge citing legal documents related to an antitrust case.

In September 2025, Google Android head Samir Samat stated that there are plans for progress in the new OS in 2026, but lawyers believe otherwise.

“The fastest path” for the operating system involves offering it to “commercially trusted testers” at the end of 2026 before the full release in 2028.

"Even when the new OS, on which Chromebooks run, becomes available, it will not be compatible with all existing devices. Google will not abandon ChromeOS at least until 2033, according to legal documents.

In January, Google ChromeOS head John Maletis stated that Google will fulfill its promise to provide devices with 10 years of automatic updates.

“Regarding the possibility of switching to the new platform, not all gadgets will be able to do so due to technical specifications,” he added.

The corporation plans to abandon ChromeOS as soon as it becomes possible.

“The phased discontinuation of this OS is scheduled for 2034,” lawyers said.

This cannot be done earlier due to legislation in some jurisdictions, which have different rules regarding device support periods.

Recall that in September 2025, a court decided that Google is not obliged to sell Chrome, calling such a measure excessive.
