CICC: Box office faces high-base impact, focus on the flexibility of domestic films
On February 3rd, China International Capital Corporation (CICC) released a research report stating that the Spring Festival period is an important time for the start of the year, often laying the foundation for the year’s box office development and having the potential to catalyze the box office performance of individual films.
According to Maoyan Professional Edition, as of now, seven domestic films have announced release dates for the 2026 Spring Festival: “Flying Past Life 3,” “Silent Chilling,” “Dartman: The Wind Rises in the Desert,” “Bears Out and About: Year of the Bear,” “Galaxy Dreams,” “Panda Project: Tribal Adventure,” and “Return: Wolf Pack.”
CICC believes that the release schedule for domestic films during the 2026 Spring Festival is relatively late, and the box office during this period may be affected by the high baseline set by “Nezha 2” in 2025. Additionally, due to the delay of key releases for imported films “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar 3” into the 2026 Spring Festival schedule, domestic filmmakers may be concerned about market share being squeezed, leading to more cautious scheduling and conservative promotional strategies. Overall, current audience demand shows a trend of concentration among top films, and there is a possibility of dark horse box office hits emerging when market expectations are low.
