Paradex Faces Liquidation Wave After Race Condition Glitch During Database Maintenance
Paradex disclosed plans to compensate 200 affected users with a $650,000 refund following a technical malfunction during platform maintenance. According to PANews, the incident occurred on January 19 when the platform initiated a scheduled 30-minute database upgrade. During this critical operation, a race condition—a timing vulnerability that emerges when concurrent processes access and modify shared data simultaneously—compromised the integrity of crucial system operations.
The Race Condition and Its Technical Cascade
The race condition triggered a data corruption event where compromised information was persisted to cloud storage and subsequently broadcasted to the Paradex Chain. This technical failure resulted in market funding indices being anomalously reset to zero across the platform. The cascading effect created artificial market distortions, generating abnormal gains and losses that automatically triggered liquidation events affecting multiple trading pairs and numerous user positions.
Platform’s Emergency Response and Recovery Measures
In response to the crisis, Paradex immediately restricted platform access to prevent further damage. The team systematically canceled all active orders—with the exception of protective take-profit and stop-loss orders—to freeze trading activity. The platform then executed a blockchain rollback, restoring the network state to a snapshot captured prior to the maintenance window initiation. This restoration strategy successfully reverted the corrupted data and halted the cascade of liquidations.
Compensating Users and Rebuilding Trust
The $650,000 refund to 200 impacted users represents Paradex’s commitment to accountability and user protection. This incident underscores the critical importance of robust concurrent programming practices and comprehensive testing protocols when managing decentralized infrastructure. The platform’s transparent disclosure and swift remediation efforts aim to restore user confidence in its operational resilience.
