Multisig Wallet Verification: Vitalik's Practical Guide Without dApp Installation
Vitalik Buterin recently demonstrated on X how users can verify multisig wallet addresses without installing specialized applications. This practical method opens new possibilities for wallet users who rely on simple and reliable verification solutions. According to Odaily, Vitalik showcased an innovative workflow that intelligently utilizes existing tools.
Etherscan Method: Quickly and Securely Verify Wallet Addresses
The key to Vitalik’s approach lies in using Etherscan, the leading blockchain explorer for Ethereum. Instead of waiting for the Safe app, he navigated directly to the relevant wallet address on Etherscan and used the “Read Contract” function to extract the necessary information. This method shows that users don’t always need to rely on native dApps – the right blockchain tools often provide sufficient transparency and control. Through these direct verification methods, any wallet owner can independently confirm that their multisig signer addresses are correctly configured.
Open-Source and Walkaway Test: Foundations for Better Wallet Security
Vitalik emphasized that wallets and applications that use open-source code and pass a “Walkaway Test” offer users a significantly better experience. The Walkaway Test means that a user can still fully utilize the wallet even if the provider’s service is temporarily unavailable – a critical security standard. In situations where the Safe website is temporarily unreachable, alternative access routes enable wallet holders to manage and protect their assets. This underscores the importance of decentralized solutions in wallet management.
Privacy and User Convenience: The View-Key Solution Approach
Due to increasing privacy requirements, wallet workflows may evolve further in the future. An equivalent and privacy-friendly approach is for users to store a “View-Key” – a special key that contains additional private information without revealing full control. Block explorers can support this functionality by placing sensitive data in the URL tag area and ensuring that this information remains locally within the wallet client and is not transmitted to external servers.
Security Recommendations for Safe Wallet Management
Given the risks that arise when users enter private keys or sensitive data into URLs or web page text fields, it is increasingly important that critical operations are handled directly by the wallet software itself. Secure wallet management ultimately requires a mindset shift: instead of transferring sensitive data between different tools, these processes should be fully conducted within the controlled wallet environment. This reduces exposure risks and gives users confidence that their private keys and addresses remain protected.
