Sony's "Soft Pause" Patent Publication: Automatically Lower Game Difficulty, AI Plays for You Directly
IT Home, February 24 — Tech media techpowerup today (February 24) published a blog post analyzing the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) public disclosure list, revealing that Sony has been granted a patent titled “Soft Pause,” offering players an alternative to traditional pausing.
IT Home quotes the blog, stating that the patent number is US20260021411, which provides a new option for players beyond the conventional hard pause. When players encounter sudden messages or brief distractions, the game does not fully halt; instead, it smoothly transitions into a special standby mode.
The patent details various implementation methods, allowing different types of games to develop their own “Soft Pause” features. Once activated, the game system will take a series of dynamic adjustments to assist the player.
These measures include slowing down the overall game speed, reducing level difficulty, providing clear guidance on objectives or enemy positions, enhancing aiming assistance, and extending input response time.
In extreme cases, machine learning (ML) tools may even take full control of the player’s actions. However, it is unclear whether this AI model is trained specifically on individual player data or if it only offers general support.
Sony emphasizes the potential of “Soft Pause” in virtual reality (VR) applications. In VR gaming, traditional hard pauses often instantly switch to a static menu screen, which can cause nausea or dizziness due to abrupt visual changes. “Soft Pause” maintains scene continuity, significantly improving this experience.
Currently, if players go AFK (away from keyboard) in competitive games, it can lead to disastrous consequences for the team. While games like Paladins have introduced AI takeover mechanisms after disconnection, “Soft Pause” is expected to offer a smarter, more comprehensive solution for brief offline periods.
