EU extends the deadline for the Red Sea escort mission
On February 23rd local time, the European Union Council decided to extend the EU Red Sea Escort Operation (EU Naval “Operation Aspis”) until February 28, 2027. The EU Council issued a press release stating that it agreed to allocate nearly 15 million euros to cover the joint operational costs from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027, and that a further strategic assessment of the operation will be conducted for the 2026-2027 period. The EU officially launched the Red Sea Escort Operation in February 2024. The statement from the EU Council indicated that the operation aims to maintain maritime security in the Red Sea and surrounding waters and to ensure freedom of navigation, especially for commercial ships.
