Hong Kong Stock Market Movement | Movie concept stocks lead the decline; 2026 Spring Festival box office down about 40%, weak moviegoer numbers and average ticket prices
CITIC Finance APP reports that movie concept stocks led the decline. As of the latest report, Maoyan Entertainment (01896) fell 6.86% to HKD 6.38; Happy Media (01003) dropped 5.26% to HKD 0.27; IMAX China (01970) decreased 2.95% to HKD 8.23.
On the news front, the total box office for the 2026 Spring Festival holiday reached 5.752 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of about 40%. The number of moviegoers declined by 36.2% compared to 2025, and the average ticket price was significantly reduced by nearly 3 yuan from last year’s Spring Festival, down to 50.8 yuan. Huaxin Securities stated that, apart from “Flying Past Life 3” and “The Dagger: The Wind Rises in the Desert,” other films did not meet pre-release media expectations. In terms of audience choice factors, content quality is crucial. The industry still needs to refine product development, improve quality control, and enhance industrial standards.
Dongwu Securities noted that although there were more screenings during the 2026 Spring Festival, the box office and audience numbers were lower. As of the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, the total box office for this year’s Spring Festival was only 4.36 billion yuan, compared to an average of 6.1 billion yuan during the same period from 2021 to 2025. This year’s Spring Festival box office is lower than previous years. However, a lower box office does not necessarily indicate weakened consumer demand; it is more related to supply-side factors.
