Mediterranean tragedy: Many migrants missing after Panama-flagged boat sinks
A tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Crete when a wooden boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized while a Panama-flagged cargo ship was heading to provide assistance. At least 5 people have been confirmed dead so far, and more than 20 are missing.
Capsizing in Bad Weather
The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday, when strong winds reaching force 6 and high waves of about 2.5 meters were battering the area. According to RTHK reports, when rescue ships approached the boat, many passengers rushed to one side, causing the vessel to lose balance and capsize. Survivor testimonies indicate that about 50 people were onboard at the time of the incident.
Multi-National Passengers, Including Panamanian Migrants
It has been confirmed that the capsized boat carried migrants of multiple nationalities, including Panamanians. Such an international smuggling route highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis along the Mediterranean coast. Survivors described the fear and chaos during the incident, noting that many lives were lost in the brief time before the boat capsized.
International Rescue and Search Operations
A Panama-flagged cargo ship arrived at the scene and rescued 20 survivors. Subsequently, Greek Coast Guard and European border and coast guard vessels were dispatched to the area, discovering and recovering several bodies. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities concerned that the number of missing persons may increase. They are rapidly expanding their search across a broad area. Similar incidents have repeatedly occurred in this region, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen international maritime safety and migrant protection measures.
