Saudi Arabia and Iran: Gulf States opt for active defense
Faced with escalating regional tensions, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are currently developing radically different defensive strategies from their traditional approach. According to information reported by the Wall Street Journal and analyzed by Jin10, regional authorities have clearly indicated that prolonged tolerance of Iranian aggression is no longer feasible. This strategic shift marks a major turning point in the geopolitical dynamics of the Gulf.
A Transformed Defense Strategy
Gulf states, led by Saudi Arabia, are gradually abandoning their traditional defensive posture in favor of a more robust preventive approach. Regional officials emphasize the need to anticipate threats rather than merely manage them afterward. This transformation directly responds to repeated Iranian provocations and drone attacks that have characterized recent years. Iran, with its growing missile and drone capabilities, is perceived as an existential threat by several Gulf capitals.
Moving Toward Preemptive Offensive Measures
Among the strategic options currently under consideration, preemptive neutralization of Iranian military infrastructure is prominent. Regional planners are seriously examining the possibility of striking missile launch sites and drone bases located within Iran before these weapons pose an immediate threat. This approach represents a break from previous years of relative restraint and reflects the growing impatience of governments with Tehran’s repeated incursions.
A New Regional Posture Asserted
Anwar Gargash, the UAE foreign policy advisor, clearly articulated this new strategic vision. He insists that Gulf states must abandon passivity and adopt an active, calibrated defensive stance. According to his statements, regional responses should be proportional to the severity of threats from Iran. The advanced military capabilities of Saudi Arabia and its allies now enable such a shift toward proactive defense, marking a fundamental change in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
