Subpoenas Against Powell Blocked
A critical chapter has closed in the tension between the judiciary and the executive in the United States. A federal judge has blocked subpoenas sent by the Trump administration through the Department of Justice (DOJ) to Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Jerome Powell. Judge James Boasberg stated that prosecutors presented "almost zero evidence" and that there was "a mountain of evidence" that the real aim of the investigation was to force Powell to lower interest rates or resign.
This legal process was ignited when the Department of Justice launched an investigation into Powell in January 2026, citing cost overruns in the Fed's headquarters renovations. The investigation was seen by many as part of the Trump administration's long-standing pressure on the Fed's independence. Powell had characterized the investigation as a "pretext" for an attempt to politically pressure interest rate policies.
Judge Boasberg's decision was interpreted as a strong judicial safeguard for the Fed's principle of setting monetary policy independently of political interference. The ruling stated that the subpoenas were issued for an improper purpose: harassment and political pressure.
However, this legal battle is far from over. Following the decision, U.S. District Attorney Jeanine Pirro accused the judge of being an "activist" and announced they would appeal the ruling. This indicates that the political and legal struggle over the Fed's independence will continue in the coming days.
