When Grief Meets the Internet: An Infant Dies – and the Family Becomes a Target

The story of reality TV personalities Lisa-Marie Straube and Furkan Akkaya should have been a time of mourning. But after the death of their four-month-old son, they experienced the opposite: On the internet, they were confronted with a wave of hate comments. What should normally have remained an intimate moment of grief became public harassment.

The burden became so unbearable that the couple filed several reports against those who made these offensive statements. The massive attacks online forced authorities to take action. Following the complaints, the prosecutor's office launched an investigation and sent a signal against increasing violence in digital spaces.

The case illustrates a familiar phenomenon: In times of grief and personal suffering, celebrities often become targets of online mob mentality. The fact that an infant died and the family experienced contempt instead of compassion raises questions about the responsibility of social media and the protection of grieving people.
