Meta launches the brand new Ray-Ban Display AI glasses, but Zuckerberg's live video call awkwardly fails.
Meta officially unveiled its first Ray-Ban AI smart glasses with a built-in display at the annual developer conference Meta Connect 2025. Considered the most talked-about AR glasses since Google Glass in May, this model focuses on real-time translation, navigation, and AI assistant features. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg's live demonstration was awkwardly unsuccessful.
Meta Ray-Ban Display: The first AI glasses with a "built-in screen" have arrived.
Today, Meta and Ray-Ban have teamed up to launch the Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, priced at $799, which are expected to go on sale first in the United States on September 30.
Meta Ray-Ban Display AI Glasses and Neural Band
These glasses can project a small, clear color screen on the inner side of the right lens, displaying text, images, and even video call screens, without being noticed by others.
In addition to supporting Meta's native applications like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, it can also instantly translate conversations, video calls, and photo sharing, and even provide navigation, reminders, or recipe guidance through AI.
Neural Band bracelet opens up a new way of operation
The newly launched Meta Neural Band is a wristband that can sense the electrical signals of the hand's muscle nerves. Users can input text to reply to messages through pinching, sliding, rotating, or even "air writing."
Zuckerberg further claimed, "I can now input about 30 words per minute through Neural Band."
Oakley Vanguard for the sports community
In addition to Ray-Ban Display, Meta has also launched the Oakley Meta Vanguard sports smart glasses.
The glasses do not have a built-in screen, but integrate a camera, microphone, and speakers, allowing them to interact with Garmin sports watches to provide real-time data such as speed and heart rate. Priced at $499, they are expected to go on sale on October 21.
Press conference failure: unable to answer video calls, AI does not respond to inquiries.
Although the new product launch is eye-catching, Zuckerberg's live demonstration had an awkward mishap.
For example, when Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth's WhatsApp video call kept appearing on his glasses, Zuckerberg seemed a bit flustered and was unable to answer for a long time, so Boz had to go on stage himself to meet him.
Next, when demonstrating how the AI feature guides consumers to prepare dishes based on recipes, the AI glasses repeatedly said "Now you have all the ingredients ready...", but never answered the reporter's question about "What is the first step to take?".
Ultimately, Zuckerberg attributed the failure of the demonstration to Wi-Fi issues, and then played a pre-recorded video showing how AI assists in designing surfboards and ordering parts, leaving the audience in laughter.
High prices and failed demonstrations: Will the market buy it?
This press conference showcased Meta's ambitions in the smart glasses field. From trendy everyday use to the sports market, and integrating AI features, they are attempting to target various demographics comprehensively. However, the blunders during the press conference and the high price may affect future market acceptance.
