TikTok Under Fire: Layoffs Raise Concerns Over User Safety

TikTok moderators in the UK are sounding the alarm. They warn that after the mass layoffs of hundreds of employees, young users of the platform could be exposed to more harmful content.

Layoffs and Union Shadows Experienced content safety workers were laid off just days before a scheduled union vote. According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the timing is far too “coincidental” — they see the layoffs as an attempt to undermine employees’ organizing efforts. John Chadfield of CWU stated that the move threatens the very “frontline of public service,” as these moderators protected families from toxic content. He called it a sham layoff, aimed at shifting jobs abroad to cheaper labor markets.

TikTok Bets on Artificial Intelligence The company argues this is part of a global restructuring and an effort to streamline processes with AI moderation. According to TikTok, artificial intelligence will also help protect workers from being exposed to traumatic material. Critics, however, warn that algorithms cannot replace the judgment of trained moderators who, over years of experience, learned to spot subtle nuances, context, and hidden harmful messaging. They fear users could face more risks from disinformation, violence, or sensitive content.

Protests Across Europe The London protest is part of a broader wave of demonstrations also taking place in Berlin and Dublin, pointing to a Europe-wide restructuring by TikTok.

Rising Tensions in the US The controversy unfolds just as TikTok faces mounting pressure in the United States, where the government is weighing whether the platform should separate from its Chinese parent company ByteDance due to national security concerns.
