On February 3, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a federal government funding bill, ending a partial government shutdown that began on January 31 due to a bipartisan budget impasse. The shutdown was caused by the Senate-passed appropriations bill on January 30 not being promptly approved by the House of Representatives, leading to a "technical shutdown" of nine departments including the Department of Defense and the Department of the Treasury, affecting approximately 750,000 federal employees who were forced to take leave. The new bill funds most departments through the end of the fiscal year (September 30), but the Department of Homeland Security only received two weeks of temporary funding to continue negotiations over immigration enforcement disputes. During the shutdown, agencies such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics suspended the release of economic data, heightening market concerns over Federal Reserve decisions. This is the second government shutdown in 2026, following a record 43-day shutdown in November 2025, highlighting deep-seated disagreements between the two parties on issues such as healthcare subsidies and immigration policies. Although the crisis has been temporarily resolved, the bill does not cover the full year's budget, and analysts warn that a shutdown could occur again by the end of January 2026.
